» Migisi - Problem With Gossip

In response to Problem With Gossip posted by pink101:
.
Some gossipers (drama junkies) learn just enough about somebody to be able to fabricate convincing lies about them. They spin a believable tale. But I have a theory. Gossip has a way of sorting out real friends from mere acquaintances. Like sorting wheat from chaff. A real friend would ask me about what (s)he'd heard, and not jump to a conclusion. An acquaintance wouldn't bother to ask and wouldn't care if they got it wrong. The latter would be no friend, and no loss to me.
.
From my life observations, yes - the gossiper gets what (s)he gives (and more). What goes around, comes around. Sometimes justice is swift, and sometimes it has to gain momentum.

.
I don't know; but, I think this may be the case with these "drama junkies" as you call them. It seems to apply. Read on. happy heh heh
.
What we are exposed to through the media comes at us in two main venues--one fiction and the other, non-fiction.
.
We can break down the fictional further to the fantastic, the feel-good type of entertaining novel, murder mysteries and horror stories, and the classical of which there is always an important life message. The latter is almost non-fiction in a certain sense. Stories like the Oedipus Trilogies qualify as classical. The majority of Hollywood entertainment seems to be of the former.
.
Non-fiction is what is left and is mostly educational in some sense or another.
.
I think our propensity toward the feel good fiction phenomenon is related to gossipy type life styles in that the afflicted, somehow, have developed a make believe view of reality. I think they must spend time imagineering their life's experiences. And, so, they live out the fantasies they create in their mind. Not only do they live them out; but, maybe, they work to bring their fantasies to life. If things work out, all it well. If things don't work out, they find fault and fix blame and gossip is a part of that.
.
That is just an hypothesis. It may be right and it may be erroneous. But, I think it is probably at least true is some cases.
.
Maybe Prof. Prado has opened an important issue about life in the twenty-first century. Read the threads on the bi-polars here at suite101.com.

I think your words above describe the bipolar thread (your link) accurately. A good example of jumping to conclusions! It's easier to fix blame on some mental 'condition' in a partner than to ponder one's own part in a failed relationship, or to accept that some relationships simply don't work out. Their plea for 'help' or 'advice' is merely an attempt to legitimize their gossiping, IMO.
.
I agree with your media connection to increased gossip. Soap operas, celeb stalking shows, and Dr. Phil type programming are very popular these days.

Gossip is a destructive quality in anyone. I wanted to point out...what about these message groups?

How often do you hear both sides of any story? before jumping quite happily to conclusions?

It has happened here and there all over suite over the years I have posted. And just look at some of the destruction to people's lives it causes.

I know! I know! we can rise above it. We can ignore it. We can go away and not stay a part of the group. But in the final analysis, do gossips win?

I like the bit about parking their truck in the gossip's driveway. What a comeupance. LOL (There goes my sense of humor or is it justice?)

God bless, J

.
I don't believe so, J. Yes, they might 'win' some over to their side temporarily - until those folks realize that they too have or will become the gossiper's next target.
.
Winning implies there's some kind of a prize. What prize could a gossiper win?
.
I was a target of malicious gossip years ago. (Who hasn't been at one time or another, ay?) That experience taught me to guard my privacy vigorously, and avoid any association with drama junkies.
.
I like the bit about parking their truck in the gossip's driveway. What a comeupance.
.
Yes, I enjoyed his creative response too. It put the gossiper herself in the middle of her own lie. I love it.

I think both of you are right on.
.
As far as winning is concerned, it seems like the gossip might be upset that things aren't going according to their make believe tea party world, so they do their rottenest to destroy everyone else's chance for happiness.
.
If they think that is winning, I wonder what they call losing?
.
:)

True nuff. Misery does love company, no? The drama junkies I knew led such boring lives that they started rumors and caused trouble for others just to break the monotony. And I think jealousy triggers a lot of gossip.
.
Have you ever played the old parlor game 'Telephone'? As a story is passed down the line from one person to another, it changes dramatically. The malicious gossiper adds a nasty twist to every story.

I chanced upon this discussion after reading the article. It's not in the list of M&S discussions. I miss the List of Recent Discussions which kept me informed of new discussions at Health, Education, Mind & Soul etc...all at the one location/list. When did suite101 delete that facility?

I guess the questions are about something very personal, and very hard right at the moment. Yes, I know, there is no prize! Yes, I know, they will get theirs in the end!

In Spiritualism we have a principle to live by: Compensation and Retribution hereafter for all the good and evil deeds done on earth.

It is a natural law of cause and effect. Living it, though, is still a part of each of us in our own way.

And wasn't that just what happened to the gossiper! While I do not subscribe to the thought we are the instrument of Gods' judgement and/or retribution, I do feel a creative solution is sometimes the best answer. Where is my truck? LOL

God bless, J
