Is that an old one.

First time I heard it was from my grandmother when I was about eleven years old. We lived in the country at a lake next to a religious camp ground.

My grand mother was mentioning someone to me and she said they were as ugly as an old stick in the mud. I knew what that was because there was a swamp nearby where I went to catch frogs. Near the edges of the swamp there were muddy areas and sticks often fell off a nearby oak tree to land in the mud. And I had seen many of those old sticks in the mud.
