» pink101 - I Am Celtic

In response to Little White Boy posted by pradocg:
I have Celtic ancestors.
.
I was looking for a reference to the movie, Bells of St Mary's, and something about Barry Fitzgerald who always played a Catholic priest and I ran across this. Now, you couldn't possibly be upset with these one liners:
.
# 1 What's an Irish seven course dinner? A six pack and a potato!
.
# 2 Who is the corpse at an Irish wake? The sober one in the corner!
.
# 3 What is the thinnest book in the library? Great Irish cooking!

In response to I Am Celtic posted by pink101:

Interesting; I thought all three were funny, but my wife, who is half Irish, half Scottish, thought only the third was funny and that the first and second were put-downs.

(By the way, was this a response to my email? If not, feel free to use the address to respond; I just don't want it given to others.)

» pink101 - The Irish

In response to I Am Celtic posted by pradocg:
I'm careful about addresses. One of my pet peeves is about people who don't use the BCC on their emails to multiple addressees.
.
My ancestors are Welsh, Irish, Scots, and Limey. So, I thought the jokes were funny and harmless.
.
We laugh at things that relieve our stresses. One liners like the three I gave above help people overcome their personal problems. There's no human more valid than an Irishman who laughs at their own Irishness.
.
Thank God for the Irish!
.
It's so great to be Irish that a special day has been set aside, once a year, where everyone can claim to be Irish. Feith and begorra!

» pink101 - Is This Joke Sexist?

.
Is this joke sexist?
.
Question: What's the difference between men and wine?
.
Answer: Wine matures with age.

Pradocq: Unfortunately, for me, I just found this discussion on Suite101. Due to some errant factors, I have been unable to post here for some time, but found what was said in Ethics, etc. very interesting indeed. You will be missed!

I haven't found much humor in any of the jokes expressed. I am an old stick in the mud when it comes to humor...it should offend no one.

God bless, J

Boy!
.
Is that an old one.
.
First time I heard it was from my grandmother when I was about eleven years old. We lived in the country at a lake next to a religious camp ground.
.
My grand mother was mentioning someone to me and she said they were as ugly as an old stick in the mud. I knew what that was because there was a swamp nearby where I went to catch frogs. Near the edges of the swamp there were muddy areas and sticks often fell off a nearby oak tree to land in the mud. And I had seen many of those old sticks in the mud.
.
How did you first hear that term, J?

» Louise88 - Jokes told on one's in-group

I think people are attracted by hearing a member of another group (especially a persecuted group) tell jokes on that group. It's like a free ticket to laugh at something that might be in poor taste, without having to decide whether or not it's my job to speak up for the oppressed. I can say to myself "I'm such a sensitive person! [Black / male / homosexual / First Nations / handicapped ] people trust me enough to tell the jokes that they tell each other, and they don't mind if I laugh!"

But I also think that telling the jokes to 'outsiders' can send the wrong message about the context in which the jokes are acceptable. There's are a couple of jokes about my own religious minority that I've heard from other members of that group (my father got them from my uncle, for example) which I enjoyed passing on to people who weren't part of that religion but who knew enough about it to think the jokes were funny. Yet later I found myself angered to hear those people telling the jokes to others. In that context, it felt as if they were all ridiculing at my family and my choices, without acknowledging that someone in the room identified with that group.

In response to Jokes told on one's in-group posted by Louise88:

I quite agree, especially with the last part. It's when the jokes are retold, outside but on the group, that it goes wrong. But once they've been told by a member of the group, it seems churlish to say, "Oh, but you can't tell them!" The obvious response, "But you told it," can't really be countered with "But I'm one of..." That sounds like a strange sort of in-house prejudice.

Can a sense of humor be that refined and defined? Humor is meant to be for all?
