» Migisi - I confess...

.
I confess the main reason I avoid telling a lie is that I have a horrible memory. I'd have trouble remembering what lie I told to whom. That guarantees exposure. Can we list the likely consequences we'd suffer after our lie is exposed? Maybe that's what's missing... experiencing real consequences.

There is an entire generation of people in which it appears it's the de rigeur to lie.
.
Or am I wrong about the "Me Generation"?

Is lying a survival behavior from the beginning of human cognizance (the 'Adam and Eve' sin-drome)? Has dishonesty 'trickled-down' (been taught through example) from one generation to the next - increasing exponentially as the population grows - thereby making it more noticable? Getting deep here, Pink.

All in all, I'd say, there's a whole lot of lying going on.
.
From where did I steal that one?

:)
.
More importantly,
.
December 7, 1941.
.
The words "REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR" appeared in caps in the original sheet
music.

.
"History in ev'ry century records an act that lives forevermore.
We'll recall, as into line we fall, the thing that happened on Hawaii's
shore."
.
Chorus
.
"Let's REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR
As we go to meet the foe.
Let's REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR
As we did the Alamo.
We will always remember how they died for Liberty.
Let's REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR
And go on to victory."
.
The above was taken from the original sheet music Copyrighted in 1941 by
the Republic Music Corp., 607 5th Ave., New York, N.Y.
.
Off to the races.

I spend a couple hours a day working with a veteran who is going through some stressful times in his life.
.
One of his problems has to do with a woman (surprize, surprize) whom he suspects of having something or other on the side.
.
Today, he was telling me about some of his suspicions and the clues he has that something isn't right. He said, "She's basically an honest person and honest people can't lie very well."
.
Can you address that, Professor Prado?
.
My responsibility with the veteran is to listen a lot.

I think the problem here is in just what your friend means by "basically." I think it's true that honest people don't lie very well, probably because they're not very comfortable when lying--and of course lack of practice. But to describe someone as "basically honest" is to hedge; perhaps too much. What counts? Someone who won't lie about someting important but will about lesser things? From what you describe, it sounds like the individual is lying--or trying to lie--about something important. Okay, maybe the individual wouldn't lie, or would stop lying, in a life-or-death situation, but that isn't what's at issue, is it. I suspect that when one adds "basically" to describe someone's honesty, it reveals more wishful thinking than it does anything else.
