» pink101 - Exaggeration

Just as some people talk too much, some people embellish what they say. And just as those who talk too much seldom really appreciate just how much they talk, those who embellish seldom are aware of what they're doing.

Sounds like hyperbole to me.

I've found myself embellishing for effect, because it makes for a more interesting story! It is lying, because it's not what honestly happened. Sometimes, though, it just felt like more - for example, saying you've been waiting for an hour when it's really only been 20 mins, because it felt like an hour.

I think it's all about intent. I love a good story and/or joke, and I fully expect creative embellishment - knowing it's intended (and sometimes necessary) to entertain. Who hasn't heard about the mongo fish that got away? Think of the novels and stand up comedians. I do think the creative embellisher is consciously aware that he's intentionally enhancing his story.
.
Compulsive/pathological liars, on the other hand, lie about everything and everyone for their own twisted reasons. Some intentionally and knowingly lie most often to hurt or deceive their target, not to entertain anyone (except maybe themselves). Others may be so accustomed and practiced at lying that it becomes an unconscious act for them. Just my personal observations here.

I remember buying my first new car. It was a 1956 Rocket 88 Oldsmobile.
.
There were no speed limits in Michigan yet in the open country and, so, alone on a highway one afternoon, I opened her up all the way--90, 95, 100, 105, whoosh!
.
Later, when I was in the office talking about it I told how the highway changed its shape at such high speeds so that it was a pin point ahead the widened up to the car at a 45 degree angle. Now, that surely was exaggeration; but, it seemed like the truth at the time.

I think most of the examples in these postings are pretty innocent; it's not really the sort of thing I had in mind. I know a woman who starts telling you about some event or something she's read, and about halfway through you know she's inventing. There are all sorts of cues: she looks at you very seriously, her tone of voice changes, she leans forward intently. If she had a run-in with a sales-clerk, it suddenly becomes two, or even three, or maybe the manager of the store. If you say you paid too much--or too little--for something, she immediately recounts how she came to pay more--or less. If she's read the same story in the newspaper, she "remembers" all sorts of things you didn't notice--and if you happen to have the paper with you, oh, well, then it was in another paper.
