And that's the rub: the cost isn't very high anymore, given how new procedures protecting students' "rights" take the edge off any repercussions.
.
What about the legal proprietary rights of the author (copyrights)? Is that ever addressed with the students?
.
I spent five years writing a 'how to' book. I copyrighted my work and illustrations, published the book privately, and made it available only through my nonprofit organization as a fund raising item.
.
I hold a series of private seminars annually - the book is sold to students as a seminar study guide. One adult student purchased my book and photocopied the entire work along with other copyrighted material he'd collected. He put the photocopied material in a 3-ring binder, and SOLD it to his students attending a junior college course he taught. He was the TEACHER - who saw nothing wrong with SELLING copyrighted material. The school administration knew this copyrighted material was part of his course curriculum. Obviously they saw nothing wrong with it either.
.
Of course, I demanded they cease and desist under threat of legal action. They withdrew MY material, but continued to use and sell other author's works.
.
In this case, the institution itself promoted cheating, plagerism, and the illegal/unethical behavior of its instructors. So, how can anyone expect the student not to behave the same?

That whole idea is big time on the agenda for the New World Order, NWO. Big money wants those copyrights removed so they can turn them into money making ventures. Any person who knows about making money from investments quickly sees the opportunities in such ventures.
.
There are literally millions of copyrights and patents that can be resurrected and turned into big money makers.
.
Another reason to get involved in local politics. You will be surprized how easy it is to take over your local county political parties.

» pradocg - Stealing ideas

It's quite amazing how low on our value-scale intellectual property is. If you doubt this, just look into what Hollywood and TV writers make compared to the people who star in the programs and films they write. Consider also how so many teachers and professors "save" their students money by Xeroxing copies of articles, collecting them, and charging the students for "costs." In the meantime, publishers and authors get zip.

I think part of the problem is that people who have the ideas, who write stories and articles and books are so keen to be widely read that they too often don't pay enough attention to how their work is being lifted.

I understand that one of the problems for people writing for Suite 101 is that their on-line articles are often plagiarized.
