» pink101 - An Awkward Perspective

.
I think you've put your fingers on an awkward perspective that seems to be growing in our culture.
.
RL Sharpe's latest article on feminism touches on this same subject in a way.

In response to An Awkward Perspective posted by pink101:

I happened to catch the Crier Report on Court TV yesterday. Crier was interviewing a woman (I've since forgotten her name) who has written a book called the Colter culture (about conservative commentator Colter). The author was talking about much the same thing--the tendency in our culture to think we must be nasty in order to make our point. I never have understood that kind of thinking.

peace and love,

» Louise88 - On trying to have it both ways

I agree with your explanation. They're trying to have it both ways, looking like rebels but not getting in trouble for it. I think they actually lose out both ways - they do offend some people, and they don't impress the real bad boys either because it's generally obvious that they're trying.

I have always been more annoyed by someone who starts to swear or say something crude in public, then interrupts to apologize directly to me, than I would be if the person just swore or said something inappropriate. Apologizing to me as a woman illustrates the speaker's belief that the language is otherwise acceptable in this workplace or this classroom, and in fact underlines the speaker's assumption that I don't really belong there.
